The Leader Approach

Latest News - Communities Mean Business - Leader Approach

The eagerly anticipated Leader programme of funding will soon be available in Staffordshire.

After getting off to a great start with lots of community consultation events, which helped build the case for Advantage West Midlands to invest in the area, the scheme seemed to slow a little whilst the various negotiations took place.  These seem to have now been settled and a launch event is due to be held at the County Showground in a month’s time to let everyone know about the scheme.

Background

Since it was launched in 1991 the Leader initiative has been working to provide rural communities in the EU with a method for involving local partners in steering the future development of their area. The Leader Approach is the Community Regeneration Axis of the RDPE providing for a community based bottom up approach to rural development.

The overall aim of the programme is to improve the sustainability of rural services underpinned by skilled and knowledgeable business people and community groups. The strategy will have 3 key aims:

1. To improve rural services by strengthening micro businesses and community groups.

2. To develop the tourism product.

     3. To enhance, interpret and promote local heritage and environment.
